Preparing For Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal might not be that simple of a procedure. Before undergoing one, here are some things you can do to prepare for it:

  • Choose a qualified dermatologist to perform tattoo removal procedures.
  • Communicate why you want your tattoo removed and manage expectations.
  • Ask your dermatologist about the risks associated with your tattoo removal.
  • Be mindful of the procedure’s cost since it is generally not covered by medical insurance.
  • Follow all pre-and-post treatment instructions carefully to avoid complications from the procedure.

Improving Tattoo Removal Outcomes

To help increase the chances of successful tattoo removal and reduce the risks of side effects, you can try the following:

  • Stick to the number of sessions recommended for laser tattoo removal

Do not stop treatment before you see optimal results since each treatment removes more ink.

  • Follow your dermatologist’s instructions for aftercare

Follow instructions on cleaning the site, antibiotics application, moisturizing, and covering the treated area.

  • Protect your treated skin from sun damage

Discoloration of the site can occur from sun exposure. Avoid sunlight, wear clothing that covers the area, and apply sunscreen that is broad-spectrum and with at least an SPF of 30.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments do I need for complete removal?

Since every tattoo is unique and how the skin responds also differs from person to person, there is no possible way to perfectly predict the number of sessions required for complete tattoo removal. Generally, most tattoos will require need 6 to 8 sessions but 10 or more for larger tattoos.

    Is tattoo removal painful?

The removal process can cause discomfort. Some redness, mild swelling, and tenderness are expected but are only temporary.

    What can happen during recovery?

Aside from redness and swelling, scabbing and flaking of the treated area may occur and last for several days. For laser surgery and dermabrasion, your body will eliminate the tattoo pigment in 6-12 weeks and the tattoo will be less visible after this period.
