Botulinum toxin therapy has several medical uses. In dermatology, it is used in certain cases to reduce the effects of aging and to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The following are common dermatologic conditions where botolinum toxin injections may be used to treat:

  • Reduce the appearance of signs of aging on the face- frown lines (fine lines that appear between the brows), crow’s feet (lines that appear near the eyes), lip lines, dimpling of the chin
  • Improve the appearance of the mouth and surrounding area- lift the corners of the mouth, soften a square jawline, correct a gummy smile
  • Reduce excessive perspiration in the underarms when topical treatment is ineffective.
  • Improve the appearance of neck bands

Risks Of Botulinum Toxin Injection

Adverse effects of botulinum toxin injections are more frequently observed in therapeutic uses for medical concerns rather than cosmetic purposes due to the higher dosing required.

When they occur in a dermatologic procedure, side effects can be mild to moderate but are usually self-limited. Complications can include:

  • Symptoms due to the use of anesthesia

Bruising, edema, or pain at the injection site can develop due to the injection of anesthesia.

  • Periorbital symptoms

Blepharoptosis (low-lying upper eyelid margin ) and eyebrow ptosis (descent of the eyebrow from its natural position) can occur and last for three months when botulinum toxin is injected near the eyes.

  • Allergy

Though rare, some can have allergic reactions to the toxin.

  • Headache

Headaches and flu-like symptoms are sometimes reported.

  • Problems with smiling

A crooked smile can be a temporary side effect and can also cause drooling.

Botulinum Toxin Injection Procedure

The procedure for botulinum toxin injection is fast, minimally invasive, and is typically done on an outpatient basis in your dermatologist’s clinic. You can expect the following to occur before, during, and after the procedure.

  • Before the procedure

Inform your doctor if you’ve had any cosmetic injections in the last four months, and if you are taking any muscle relaxants, sleeping aids, or allergy drugs. If you are taking blood thinners, you will be instructed to discontinue them several days before your injection to lower your chance of bleeding or bruising.

  • During the procedure

Botolinum toxin injections are often administered at a dermatologist’s office. Depending on your pain tolerance and indication for the procedure, sometimes an anesthesia (numbing agent) may be injected into the site. Then, a small needle is used to inject small doses of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. The number of injections required is determined by a variety of parameters, including the size of the area being treated.

  • After the procedure

You will usually be instructed to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas in the first 24 hours after the procedure. This prevents the toxin from spreading to another location. You can resume your regular daily activities immediately following the procedure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be unable to make facial expressions following treatment?

Dermatologists prefer that their patients appear natural. To accomplish this, they inject just enough to weaken and relax the targeted muscles while leaving other muscles alone. Patients are able to preserve their normal facial expressions as a result of this.

Will I lose feeling in the areas where I have the injections?

No. This treatment has no impact on your ability to feel.

When is it safe to start another treatment session?

When excessive sweating or lines and wrinkles return, you can have another treatment. Repeat therapy for lines and wrinkles may cause the muscle to thin, resulting in longer-lasting results.

When can I see the results of botulinum toxin injections?

You may notice some effect within a few days, but the full effect may take up to a week. The results can last three to four months after which you can receive another injection.
